What is Academic Vocabulary?

arrow

Catherine Snow
Harvard University

- Words that are found in texts that students need in school

- Students less likely to be exposed to academic words

- Some academic words are disciplinary. Others are "all-purpose" words (like process, convert).

- All-purpose words are important to emphasize because content-area teachers do not think to teach them.

Evelyn Ford-Connors
Boston University

- Words that show up in learning materials, assessments.

- Becomes expected in students' writing and speaking as they mature as learners.

- Those unexposed to this language can fall farther and farther behind in their academic careers.
